Route
This leg takes through the magical San Blas Archipelago in the north of Panama. We will hop from island to island and enjoy small, secluded anchorages between tiny islands full of palm trees. Officially known as Guna Yala, is home to the indigenous Guna. Unlike many indigenous groups in the Americas, the Guna have retained a high degree of autonomy and govern their territory themselves.
The archipelago consists of roughly 365 low coral islands, many fringed by coconut palms and surrounded by clear Caribbean reefs. Most islands are only a few meters above sea level. Guna culture is famous for its colorful hand-sewn textile art called Mola. Women traditionally wear vibrant molas, beadwork on their arms and legs, and often gold nose rings. Their language, customs, and traditional political system remain widely practiced.
Life in the islands is closely tied to the sea. Fishing, coconut harvesting, and small-scale trade remain important, while tourism provides increasing income. Despite modern influences, many communities maintain traditional thatched houses, communal decision-making, and a strong cultural identity that visitors immediately notice.
We will finish the trip in Colón, which sits at the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal and is one of the world’s most important shipping hubs. It serves as the gateway between the Caribbean and the Pacific. There are historic Spanish forts, dense tropical rainforest, and the engineering marvel of the canal that transformed global trade.
Activities
Days are shaped by the surroundings:
There is no fixed program — you are free to do as much or as little as you like. Some days are active and social, others quiet and slow. We’ll also have a few offshore sailing days at the beginning of the trip, giving you the chance to experience watch systems, night sailing, and life underway.
Travel to and from the Boat
Access from the San Blas is straight forward as lots of tour operators offers transfers from most major Panamanian airports. Typically, you’ll book a 4x4 transfer from Panama City to the coast and then travel by boat to the Islands. Departure will be from Colon, which has its own international airport or transfers to Panama City.
Requirements
No prior sailing experience is required. However, you should be comfortable with a few longer sailing passages at the beginning of the trip and be ready for a more remote environment towards the end — limited infrastructure, simple living, and a strong connection to nature. Interest in water activities is a big plus, but no experience is needed. You must be able to enter the relevant countries (Panama). A relaxed and adaptable mindset is essential — this trip is less about ticking boxes and more about immersing yourself in one of the most beautiful and untouched sailing areas in the Caribbean.
