Route

This leg takes through the magical Bocas del Toro, a lush Caribbean archipelago near the border with Costa Rica, known for its rainforest-covered islands, mangrove forests, and calm turquoise waters. Bocas features jungle-clad hills, abundant wildlife, and a vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture influenced by English-speaking Caribbean settlers.

The area is famous for dolphins, sloths, colorful poison dart frogs, and rich marine life. We are going to explore secluded anchorages, surf breaks, coral reefs, and quiet villages connected mainly by boat. Bocas offers a unique blend of tropical wilderness, laid-back island life, and some of the most accessible rainforest in the Caribbean.

We will both start, and finish the trip in Colón, which sits at the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal and is one of the world’s most important shipping hubs. It serves as the gateway between the Caribbean and the Pacific. There are historic Spanish forts, dense tropical rainforest, and the engineering marvel of the canal that transformed global trade.

Activities

Days are shaped by the surroundings:

  • Hiking the rainforest
  • Snorkeling and freediving
  • Spearfishing and fishing for fresh meals
  • Exploring tiny islands by dinghy
  • Visiting local communities
  • Beach fires, simple cooking, and slow evenings under the stars

There is no fixed program — you are free to do as much or as little as you like. Some days are active and social, others quiet and slow. We’ll also have a few offshore sailing days at the beginning of the trip, giving you the chance to experience watch systems, night sailing, and life underway.

Travel to and from the Boat

Typically, you’ll book a 4x4 transfer from Panama City to the coast and then travel by boat to the Islands. Both Arrival and Departure will be from Colón, which has its own international airport or transfers to Panama City.

Requirements

No prior sailing experience is required. However, you should be comfortable with a few longer sailing passages at the beginning of the trip and be ready for a more remote environment towards the end — limited infrastructure, simple living, and a strong connection to nature. Interest in water activities is a big plus, but no experience is needed. You must be able to enter the relevant countries (Panama). A relaxed and adaptable mindset is essential — this trip is less about ticking boxes and more about immersing yourself in one of the most beautiful and untouched sailing areas in the Caribbean.
